In maps of Gettysburg, these units (19 MA, 42 NY and the 19 ME) are shown as being all alone against a hoard of Confederates. Now Coddington doesn't mention Brewster and Carr at all, except perhaps generally as some units streaming from that area of the field in confusion and I gather, some terror. But Humphrey applauds both officers as having shown : "...cool courage, determination and skillful handling of their troops..." and it certainly seems to me that they really did make the best of a pretty bad situation, so what I'm wondering was, Where the three units mentioned earlier put in to support Brewster and Carr during their withdrawal, or were they put there to hold the line when it was obvious that Brewster and Carr were leaving, and were they really all alone until Willard arrived?
I want to take this tour later this month, and would like very much to have a better handle on what happened than I usually do.

the were put into the field during or after Brewster and Carrs withdrawel? then Willard moved in to more or less the same area previously occupied by Brewster and Carr?
