GDG- overwhelming sadness on the field

Hi all,

I have been for the longest time, trying to figure out why when I am at
Gettysburg the range of emotion that I feel is incredible.

Briefly I have a habit or tradition that when I stay at Larson's out on
Seminary Ridge, I like to walk down to Stewarts Battery monument and drink a
cup of coffee and just let my eyes take in the first day field.
There is an overwhelming sense of a couple things. Awe... sadness, heaviness
actually, then peace. And it never fails now, the wind or a breeze kicks up,
and I swear I can hear voices on the wind, say "thank you"..... And my quiet
reply , "No thank you!"

I also find myself quoting that line from the movie Patton. "God I love it
so!"... Not the suffering, not the horror, but GB of all the Battlefields
truly is a "Vision place of Souls"

As I typed this, I realized that this is Gettysburg for me.. A Vision place
of souls. JLC was so prophetic in that statement. Yet I also think even he
could not fathom what Gettysburg would come to mean to generations to come.

On another note, I am sensitive to these things, and I had such a
feeling of depression in the cemetery at the 135th re-enactment that I
had to leave it. There was so much going on there at the time I really
wanted to stay and see it all, but couldn't. The rest of Gettysburg was
fine with me. Weird!

I also have the strangest, very deep feeling of overwhelming
sadness as I cross through the Weatfield on the Weatfield Road and
the feeling continues down the Plum Run Road to Devil's Den and the
Triangular field. The feeling even extends itself to LRT, but not BRT
or any other place on the field.

( well, maybe Mc Donalds, a little :-) )

Take Care,

John Leo
