Subtitle is "A Comprehensive Tactical Study of Federal Artillery the
Gettysburg Campaign." Because it read very one sides we *(Rollins and myself) decided
to add Confederate arty (another four years shot), but not near at the level
as that of the Feds. We have taken a long time (15 years to be exact) to
personalize the artillerists from the top general (Hunt) down through the rank and
file. Each of those men had individual personalities as did each and every gun
crew as a whole. We have tried to personalize the artillery fight like that of
any infantry regiment. We are up close and personal.
In my opinion one cannot truly comprehend the presence and use of artillery
at the burg (the entire war actually) until one understands the artillerists
who served them. Add politics, principles and policies and you have a story
(first chapter title: Principles, Politics and Policies").
QUESTION: How many folks on the summer tour actually ever noted Thomas'
superb position before that Sunday? By the time our readers get to July 1st we want
them to not only understand the fundamentals of artillery and all terms
applied, but the artillerists as well. What did Thomas and Hancock see that we
never noticed before?
We are scratching for 2008 ...
Thanks of inquiring,
Dave
