Bruce,
Yes it was a great article I agree. And thanks Bruce for your
insights..

I wanted to also let you know, that every time I go to the Burg, and
walk
around the angle, I ALWAYS stop and pay my respects to the 26 NC..

In addition, every time I am there, some one always walks up to that
small
monument.. And I share your thoughts on it..

I always stop at the 26 NC on McPherson Ridge. Once, while at the Oak Ridge observation tower, a older gentleman approached me and said he was the grandson of a flag bearer for the 26th, who was shot at Willoughby Run but survived, and wondered if I knew where the monument was. I took him there, but expressed skepticism that there must be a "great" or two before his "grandfather." He told me the men in his family lived long, and married young wives when the old ones died. He said he grew up hearing the story of how one flag bearer after another was shot down climbing that hill, and had always wanted to see it.

It was years ago, and I can't recall the name. But I always think of him when I visit that monument.

My question is this: I have often found a scattering of pennies (Lincoln, of course) atop the monument. Does anyone know the meaning of this? Similarly, I've found the 20th Maine marker piled with pebbles and stones. Are there some traditions behind these things?
