Ian,
This is a new one on me.
BG AlpheusWilliams states that his division (he was also acting XII Corps
commander, with Slocum continuing in his fantasy of "Wing" CO) moved to
support the Union right wing on July 2nd, followed by two brigades of
Geary's division. Williams states in his report that: "...General Geary,
by direct orders from Major-General Slocum, wasdirected to follow
[Williams's division] with two brigades, leaving Greene's brigade. of his
division, to hold the breastworks."
If Geary was ordered by Corps to leave Greene in charge of the breastworks,
and, BTW, had probably already left the Hill, why would he threaten Greene
with arrest for following orders? Neither Greene's nor Geary's report also
makes no mention of any such event.
Greene did indeed reinforce the skirmishers with elements of the 78th NY
just before the Confederate attack, mainly because the 28th PA of Kane's
brigade, on the skirmish line near Rock Creek, was being withdrawn with the
rest of its brigade. This, however, was just a logical move.
Regards,
Jack Kelly
