At the risk of sounding like I'm punting, basically, what Eric said.  Or 
more to the point, simply that on balance, I find the accepted 
interpretation the more convincing.  Not, of course, that there aren't 
elements of it, as with almost any part of the action, subject to 
differences of opinion as to details.  Also, I do have to say that the 
cavalry action here is one part of the battle where my knowledge is 
admittedly dependent more on secondary works, and I simply am not as 
familiar with the primary source material as are Eric, J.D., or any number 
of others more focused on the cavalry.
