To be sure, it is much easier to research Union casualties than their
Confederate counterparts (although Mr. Krick's "Gettysburg Death Roster"
is endlessly useful in its own right).  For Union soldiers who required
amputation or some other form of surgery, the 15-volume "Medical and
Surgical History of the Civil War" is very helpful; it's been reprinted
by Broadfoot and can be found in many large public and university
libraries.  Busey's "These Honored Dead" can be indispensable if the
soldier you're researching died of his wounds.
