Fire damages building that figured in Gettysburg battle

The Associated Press

GETTYSBURG, Pa. --

A stone building that gave cover to soldiers and served as a medical
facility during the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg was damaged by an overnight
fire early Tuesday.

The fire in the Basil Biggs House - also known as the P. Frey farmhouse -
began in the attic and severely damaged the roof. Smoke alarms and a
fire-suppression system were activated, and a park employee and his family
who live there escaped unharmed.

The cause has not been determined and a cost estimate of damages was not
immediately available.

The circa-1850s farmhouse was behind Union lines on Cemetery Ridge during
the battle, near major battle action. It was one of the battle's busiest
hospital aid stations.
