Hey, Folks,

I want to introduce myself to the group.  My name is Ron Chaplin and I live
in Iselin, New Jersey.  I was a member several years ago and I'm back and
looking forward to learning from, and possibly participating in, the
discussions.

I'm at the point in my reading of *Gettysburg *by Noah Andre Trudeau where
E. P. Alexander is positioning the artillery prior to the bombardment on the
3rd day.  Trudeau quotes Alexander to the effect that he (Alexander) was
surprised that the Federal gunners on Cemetery ridge allowed him to do this
without interference.  Why would the Federal gunners not want to knock out
the Confederate cannon as they were being set up?
