GDG- Muster- a Smith, a theif, a Thomas, and a whole lot of then & now

Hello GDG-ers:

I look forward to seeing many of you bright and early on Saturday at the Muster. Whether this will entice you to come out or to stay in bed longer, I am pleased to announce that none other than TIM SMITH will be joining me for at least the beginning of the Spangler's Spring tour. Among other things, he'll provide the real story of Jennie Wade, Wesley Culp and Jack Skelly and we can only hope there will be Canada Geese in the area for our amusement!

Also: For years I have told many of you about the project I have been involved in--the largest Gettysburg then & now project to date--and it will be unveiled at the Archives-THEFT-busting THOMAS PUBLICATIONS table at the Holiday Inn reception on the Muster Friday night. The project is a CD containing all but two of the ~238 pictures in the Gettysburg Park Commission Reports, 1893-1904, book in THEN & NOW pairs. The images are arranged by maps and submaps and each image is captioned. The images are viewable side by side or overlapping to really see the then & now effect. The CD also contains historical essays and other information. We will have a computer set up so that you can play and of course will have copies to sell at 30% off to GDG-ers. Although the price has not been set, I think it will retail for ~$25 (~$17.50 at Muster).

                                                             Saturday June 2
             * 7:00 A.M. -  Garry Adleman  - Spangler's Spring: Canteens, 
Colgrove, Culps, and Paper Cups.
               Stories of soldiers sharing water on the night of July 2, 
have made Spangler's Spring one of the most recognized landmarks associated 
with the Battle of Gettysburg. Beyond the mythology, however, the spring 
has it own unique history. Used as a picnic grounds by the residents of 
Gettysburg starting in the 1840s, the area saw intense fighting on the 
morning of July 3, 1863.  Drag yourself out of bed and join LBG Garry 
Adelman as he uses first-hand accounts and scores of images to discuss the 
battle, the Henry Spangler farm, nearby Rock Creek, and the history and 
evolution of the famous spring itself.  Surrounding areas of Culp's Hill 
may be covered as well, time allowing.
               Please park on East Confederate Avenue and at Spanglers Spring.
