Not having read the book, I'll take the road my high school kids take
and say: "But I did see the movie!" :-)
Another option might be Shelby Foote's "Stars In Their Courses" - an
extract from his story of the Civil War (or his history of the Civil
War). It should read well - Foote was a story teller and therefore wrote
in a rather casual style. Certainly not at a higher level then Mr.
J.R.R. "I - literally - wrote the dictionary" Tolkien...

PS. As one who not only read LoTR and all his other books, but have also
read most of his son's works - including the history of writing LoTR - a
fascinating set of books, by the way. Watching how that book come into
being is quite interesting...
