<< Holding the high ground on the flanks was obviously of great importance
to
the AoP. My question is whether or not the 20th Maine's role on LRT was
that much more important than that of the 137th NY on Culp's hill. Would an
ANV taking of the latter be significatly less important than taking of the
former? This is my first question as a new member of the GDG - I hope it is
not too elementary.

Great question, and, welcome to the GDG!

In truth, the fighting on Culp's Hill should no more be viewed solely in
terms of the 137th NY than that on LRT should be through the lense of the
20th ME. But in my opinion, a Confederate capture of Culp's Hill would have
had more serious consequences for the AOP than the Confederates gaining a
foothold on LRT.
