Inns of the Gettysburg Area express appreciation for the Lady
April 2 -- It was Christmas in spring for the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Associations historic Daniel Lady Farm, as the GBPA was presented with a check for $831 from the Inns of the Gettysburg Area, an association of local bed and breakfast inn operators. The check represents a portion of the proceeds from the annual Holiday House Tour held last December 9.
The tour allows the public to get a close look at how homes were decorated for the holidays during the 1860s. While it is not used for public lodging, the Lady farmhouse was included in the tour because of the intense public interest in the two-story stone residence, which dates back to the 1820s and which was used as a Confederate field hospital during the 1863 battle.
Research recently revealed that the 145-acre farm, now preserved as a conservancy played a more important role in the battle and its aftermath that previously believed, including a meeting between Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee and his left flank commanders.
Civilians of the 88th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry provided a Christmastime living history tableau in the meticulously-restored farmhouse for hundreds of visitors who got their first look inside -- the Christmas theme juxtaposed with wood floors still stained by the blood of wounded and dying Confederates.
GBPA vice-president Craig Caba accepted the check from the Inns organization, and said the funds will be used for acquisitions to present the rooms of the farmhouse as they would have appeared in 1863.
The Lady Farm is expected to again be a part of the Inns of the Gettysburg Areas 2007 holiday tour in December.
