They show those large portions of the battlefield where action was occurring, 
at a scale of a thousand feet per, well, a bit less than an inch.  The maps 
are quite clear, with every regiment engaged being identified (although some in 
reserve being depicted without identification) and the topography shown with 
contours of 20 feet.
