Here's an interesting comment by Lt. Frank Haskell[1]:

This is a quite interesting letter, one thing that amazed me was how a 
lieutenant (although, granted, Gibbon's aide-de-camp) could know the 
Confederate command hierarchy in such detail within 10 days of the 
battle. The first hand account is interesting, and some of the 
on-the-spot comments about what happened over the 3 days seems pretty 
much spot on, although there are - as is to be expected - some 
exaggerations and misinformation too.
