I think I have confused cashtown with Chambersburg.

<<No.  The whole purpose of Lee's orders was to restrain 
<<personal plunder (and the resulting demoralization of the 
<<army) and conduct a Christian campaign, not to restrict the 
<<acquiring of goods for the army.

<<Ewell was in charge of the leading infantry corps into 
<<Pennsylvania, and was responsible for wide-ranging 
<<acquisition of supplies.  He actually issued his own orders, 
<<in support of Lee's, and, if anything, they were more 
<<draconian with threats of death and the like.  And Ewell 
<<actually did execute Confederate soldiers in Pennsylvania for 
<<both desertion and for plunder, I believe (and "branded" some 
<<others).  Certainly Ewell would not have seen his actions as 
<<inconsistent with his orders.
