Thanks to all for the replies on this topic, I had always thought that 
since so much courage was associated with the taking of flags, I figured 
that once they were had, more care would have been taken with them.

PS. Speaking of disrespect, I'm working my way through Stewart's book on 
Pickett's charge, and page 41 has a jaw-dropper: "He [Pettigrew] was an 
outstanding representative of that not too common type, the intellectual 
Southerner."
