GDG- Rebel Rags Disrespected by Hays

I just finished Hess' book on Pickett's Charge (a _great_ read, by the
way - thanks out to this list for recommending it a while ago), and
after reading his account of Hays' trailing some of the captured
Confederate flags after the repulse, it got me thinking: While I have
read about this time and again, it never struck home (for some reason)
as much as it did this time. Certainly, there were still Confederate
prisoners in the area, and perhaps Confederate combatants were within
eyesight of this, and I wonder how much they were affected by this display.

Does anyone recall mention of Confederate view of this action? Or was it
a not an uncommon occurrence for the victors on the field to despoil the
vanquished trophies in such a manner?

Alan
