<< Pfanz notes that Lee had suffered pericarditis earlier in the year,
though did not seem to be bothereed by it at the time of Gettysburg. He does
suggest that diarrhea may have been a "handicap." Is this Pfanz' conclusion
as to Lee's health, or is he just reporting the facts?

The problem with trying to assess Lee's health at Gettysburg and the degree
to which it impacted his ability to command (if at all) is that there isn't
a whole lot of hard evidence. Most of what we have amounts to anecdotal
observations, plus soem rather general comments by Lee himself.
