Since we are discussing both DH Hill and Meade's abilities, I think it is appropriate to quote Hill -   

Confederate General D. H. Hill, September 1862, after Antietam – “Meade was one of our most dreaded foes.  He was always in deadly earnest, and he eschewed all trifling”.
