   In the spring of 1863, Cleburne was still an obscure and very junior 
division commander (Dec. '62) who had fought in only one battle (Stones 
River) at that level. He would not come into his own until that fall 
beginning with Chickamauga and then his signature on the letter (along with 
13 others) the following winter recommending that the slaves be freed and 
brought into the Confederate Army made further advancement politically 
impossible.
