At least up until the time in question, and certainly including Gettysburg,
I'd rate Ewell as more effective and probably even more aggressive than
Hill.  And way easier to get along with.

Remember that when Lee wrote this Ewell was not "with him", having been
wounded in August.

    I thought about that just after I hit the "Send" button. And there was 
some doubt that Ewell would ever be able to return, right? How would you 
compare Ewell and A.P. Hill?
