For one of the corps, my other choice would probably be Richard Taylor who
was wasting away in Louisiana. Taylor did not much like his commander Kirby
Smith either.
The combination of D.H. Hill and Richard Taylor would have given Lee a
powerful one-two punch to go along with Longstreet. It may have been enough
to win the Battle of Gettysburg even with the absence of Jeb Stuart.
What's your take on these personnel selections?
Tom:
Two thumbs up! Nice balance. A Virginian & a North Carolinian.
D. H. Hill, IMHO, is the obvious choice. But, as you stated, he did not work
& play well with others. He was definitely cantankerous & not afraid to
speak his mind. But he was one helluva fighter. Also like Richard Taylor, a
strong disciplinarian & another fighter.
Respectfully,
Mike Peters
