GDG- Gettysburg The second day

Mike,

The best general for the corps commander job I would say was the other
Hill. Of course, Lee and Davis would have to swallow their pride to name
him since he had rubbed both of them the wrong way big time. But he was the
aggressive fighter Lee needed in Jackson's absence, and likely would have
taken Cemetery and/or Culp's Hill on Day 1 if he had been in Ewell's shoes.
The problem was that army commanders like Lee and Bragg did not like it when
Hill let them know when he thought they had screwed up.

For one of the corps, my other choice would probably be Richard Taylor who
was wasting away in Louisiana. Taylor did not much like his commander Kirby
Smith either.

The combination of D.H. Hill and Richard Taylor would have given Lee a
powerful one-two punch to go along with Longstreet. It may have been enough
to win the Battle of Gettysburg even with the absence of Jeb Stuart.

What's your take on these personnel selections?

Tom

Tom:

I agree 100%. But was there anyone else left in the bullpen. Were there any
others outside the Commonwealth of VA better suited for the role of corps
commander? Or were there any other Virginians who would have done a better
job
than Ewell & Hill? Early? IIRC, Longstreet preferred McLaws, a fellow
Georgian
& division commander under "Old Pete."

Respectfully,
