Although this is very much pn topic it needs to move to a different
thread. The "Gettysburg the Second Day" thread is exclusively for a
discussion of the book. We are now discussing Chapter 1.

<<Sorry folks. I was just being a bit sarcastic. Personally
<<I find it
<<difficult to think of Lee as such a great man when my opinion
<<of "the Cause'
<<is not just about States rights, but at the core about the
<<right to own another human being. Jackson is another that
<<seems to be so Godly but , imho , hypocritical.
<<
<<
<<Perhaps Lee just didn't think he had anyone else that could
<<do the job ?

<<> Mike,
<<>
<<> Without naming specific individuals, my point is that Lee
<<was too much a
<<> Virginian and not enough a Confederate. It was his
<<responsibility in
<<> conjunction with President Davis to look around the armies of the
<<> Confederacy and choose the best men for the job as corps commanders.
<<> Especially since Lee was about to embark on an expedition
<<that could have
<<> grave consequences regarding the outcome of the war.
<<>
<<> At the same time, I realize that Lee would also want to
<<have men around
<<> him
<<> whom he knew and felt comfortable with. However, in this
<<case it did not
<<> work out all that well. Perhaps other experienced division
<<commanders in
<<> better health than Hill and Ewell would have made a
<<difference as his
<<> corps
<<> commanders during the campaign.
<<>
<<> This is more of an observation although it may sound like a
<<criticism of
<<> Lee. My sense is that Lee's loyalty to his state trumped
<<his desire to
<<> win
<<> the war for the Confederacy. At times this seemed to get
<<in the way of
<<> his
<<> decision making.
<<>
<<> Regards, Tom
