GDG- Gettysburg The second day

Mike,

Without naming specific individuals, my point is that Lee was too much a
Virginian and not enough a Confederate. It was his responsibility in
conjunction with President Davis to look around the armies of the
Confederacy and choose the best men for the job as corps commanders.
Especially since Lee was about to embark on an expedition that could have
grave consequences regarding the outcome of the war.

At the same time, I realize that Lee would also want to have men around him
whom he knew and felt comfortable with. However, in this case it did not
work out all that well. Perhaps other experienced division commanders in
better health than Hill and Ewell would have made a difference as his corps
commanders during the campaign.

This is more of an observation although it may sound like a criticism of
Lee. My sense is that Lee's loyalty to his state trumped his desire to win
the war for the Confederacy. At times this seemed to get in the way of his
decision making.

Regards, Tom

One has to wonder how much Lee's penchant for placing Virginians in command
over well-qualified personnel from other states had to do with Hill's
selection as corps commander (not to mention Ewell whose health was also
marginal at best).

Tom:

Which Generals from outside the Commonwealth would you have put in corps
command? DH Hill? McLaws?
