Here are a couple of photos of another of the many civil war odditis,
the southern double barreled cannon. The idea was to have the two two
balls, connected by a six to eight foot chain, be fired simultaeously
at an attacking enemy formation, wiping out at least a six to eight foot
wide swath through that fomation. Ingenius, except it didn't work. They
were never able to get the two balls to fire at exactly the same
instant, causing one ball to pull the entire combination harmlessly to
one side or the other.
Todays only surviving double barreled cannon may be seen on the lawn
of the City Hall in Athens, Ga.
