Not for nuttin, but those are just devices used by the writers to bring the four or five people who know nothing about Gettysburg up to speed. I believe that the lee bit was the first time the word Gettysburg was spoken in the movie, and the Longstreet Alexander dialoque was a compressed way of indicating the youth of the participants. unnecessary, except to the four or five people previously mentioned, but mostly harmless.
