Mystery solved. Thanks to those who offered suggestions. In other
editions of the book the symbol is expanded to {carb}ine, so the surgeon
seems to have meant that the private was shot by a cavalryman and not by
infantry. Now, does anyone with a knowledge of CW era medicine know what
the symbol that looks like the musical sign for forte might be?
