<< You mention that "...One of them wrote of nearly being surrounded on July
2 and guns from the battery being turned ..." IIRC from an earlier
discussion of your theory elsewhere, this comment actually ended up
referring to fighting on Culps Hill, not Cemetery Ridge. I'm sure if I'm
mistaken you'll correct me and post the actual passage and the reference.

Mike,
The reference is from a member of Arnold's battery, who describes the
battery being in action all afternoon, until 9:00 at night. He stated, "One
time it seemed as if we were all surrounded. Battery A, Fourth Regulars
[Cushing's battery] reversed their pieces ready to fire to the the rear."
As you indicate, this is generally taken as a reference to the sounds of
combat coming from Ewell's attacks on Culp's Hill and the Spangler's Spring
area, and, on East Cemetery Hill. Cushing's pieces were probably reversed
as a precaution against any potential Confederate breakthrough from that
direction, especially since the immediate infantry threat to their front
would have abated considerably by that time.
What this does not sound like is a man describing his and a neighboring
battery being overrun and retaken.
