I have just sent a correction to my original post; it seems that I, er, 
misspoke slightly.  Dean Thomas's book gives numerous examples of "improved" 
bullets (including those that exploded or at least separated into multiple pieces) 
for use in rifled muskets and of ingenious cartridges (including some with the 
powder pressed into a solid mass attached directly to the base of the bullet).
