Bayard Wilkeson was struck in the leg by Rebel artillery fire from Jones'
Battalion while defending Blocher's Knoll and was taken to the Alms House.
He did amputate his own leg. In an amazing act, he gave up his canteen to
another thirsting soldier and died. Harry Pfanz recounts the story in
his *First
Day* book. His father, Samuel Wilkeson, a reporter for the New York
*Times*was devastated and apparently never forgave Barlow for trying
to defend that
ground.
