Esteemed GDG Member Contributes:
At tonight's meeting of the GNMP Advisory Commission meeting Dr. Latschar
gave a Park update. Following is a brief summer of his up date for your
enjoyment.
New Museum - Visitor Center The Taneytown road entrance has been completed,
geothermal well drilling is underway, sewer lines are gone in, the
underground storm water system is being placed, water and gas lines are in,
the bus shelter is under construction and the steel is gone up for the
cyclorama gallery.
Cyclorama Painting .... Four Polish conservators have arrived to work for
two year on the painting.
Removal of Trees ..... The removal of non-historic vegetation between
Devil's Den and the Slyder farm will occur this winter. Removal of trees
around the Devil's Den comfort station and along West Confederate Avenue is
occurring now.
Orchards .... 30.5 acres of orchard will be planted in November. The 11
historic orchards are: Bliss orchards (2), Codori , Lee's headquarters, P.
Snyder, Fisher, Hummerlbaugh, Herbst, Gilbert, McLean and Culp. In 2007 the
Peach Orchard will be replanted in peach trees.
Monuments .... The Confederate Itinerary Monuments on West Confederate
Avenue have been replaced and the Union Itinerary Tablets along Baltimore
Pike at East Cemetery Hill will be replaced next year.
Regards
Dean Shultz
