<< Can anyone decribe the look of the burrough during the 1860's? By that,
I mean were the streets paved? How about the sidewalks? Were they
bricked? Cobblestoned? Wood Plank? Or dirt?
I also read that the horses trough was at the "Diamond." Did the
out-of-towners 'park' their horses there to walk around town?
One more question - I also read the the Schick store and the Fahnestock
store both sold dry goods. Being a block (or so) apart, would they have
sold the same merchandise, competing with each other? >>

For excellent selections of CW period photographs of the town, check out
Bill Frassanito's "Early Photography at Gettysburg", as well as some of his
smaller works such as the "Then and Now" books and the Bicentennial Album.

The streets were not paved. Gas streetlights have begun to be introduced.
There were some sidewalks, some brick, especially in the main business
areas, some plank, but not everywhere by any means. In other areas,
ordinary dirt walks can be seen along the sides of some streets. People
would tie their horses where convenient, and there would also be stables.
The Wagon Hotel catered to teamsters and had room for them to park their
rigs.

<< I am very sorry for all the questions...I have a passion for social
history of the period of the Civil War. It sort of brings to life the
past for me. >>

Don't be sorry. Questions are what keeps the group going.
