benefited from land lines from his headquarters at the Leister farmhouse to
at least two strategic points on the battlefield; namely Little Round Top
and Cemetery Hill.  These points had the best view of Confederate lines and
were at a sufficient distance from HQ that better or backup comms would have
been to Meade's advantage.  While he did have Signal Corps flag comms from
both LRT and CH, telegraphic comms would have been faster and more reliable,
given the issues of smoke on the field, visibility, etc. >>

No dispute that it would have been useful.  I just don't think it was the 
sort of think that was really common practice at the time.
IIRC, Hooker did have telegraphic communications from Chancellorsville, back 
to Fredericksburg and the Corps detached from the main body for operations 
in that area, but that was really a different situation than attempting to 
tie in army and corps headquarters of a concentrated force.
