My wife and in were in Gettysburg for the weekend with friends for our
annual end-of-year parade fix--it's too bad we cannot simulcast our
commentary on some of the costumes, but that a subject for another
discussion group.
On Sunday we visited with friends who are restoring a house on the
northeast corner of Middle and Franklin Streets (east of Kennie's
Market). The house was built around 1855. During the battle, Confederate
soldiers from Rhodes' Division were in and around the place. Union
troops likely passed down there street during the morning of the 1 July
as they retreated to Cemetery Hill. The current owners are looking for
any soldiers' accounts that might mention the house or the corner during
the battle. Apparently the house was in a "cone of protection" as there
is no evidence of any battle damage or repairs to any such damage.
