Melanie, one thing to keep in mind is the term "officer" - Jerome was a Lt.,
and perhaps Stone was a private or non-com under him. Therefore, it could
be entirely proper to say that Jerome was the only "signal officer" on the
field that day, when he could have had a crew of 1, 2, 3, etc. under him
that could have been privates or non-coms.
I would think it entirely plausible, and probably even, that Jerome would
have a crew of at least a few.
