Eric,
Yes, I have that book, and it's been a wonderful resource. Inasmuch as
Norton states that three signal officers were assigned to Pleasanton's Cavalry
Corps, he also mentions Jerome as "the signal officer assigned to Buford". I
will have to research the other two signal officers, but as of yet, I agree with
you in that I don't believe there were other Signal Officers specifically
assigned to Buford. I think that it is in Jerome's letter to Hancock that he
says something about "being the only signal officer on the field at the time..."
(in reference to the first day at G-Burg).
There were likely two (or even three) flagmen with Jerome, since that would
be in keeping with the usual "pattern" of assignment. Who the other
flagman/-men were other than Stone, is unknown.
Also, Stone's letter dated July 13 is headlined:
Head Quarters 1st Cavalry Division
Near Boonsboro Md.
He also says: "Since I wrote you last I have been engaged in five different
fights, and am all safe yet." I assume he is referring to be the series of
engagements Buford was involved in during his retreat. Do you know which
"five...fights" these might be?
Melanie
