<< Melanie,

So far as I know--and I have about fifteen years of research invested
in the life and military career of John Buford--I am only aware of
Jerome being assigned to Buford's division. However, keep in mind
that Jerome was an officer, and it sounds like your soldier was an
enlisted man who may have been assigned to Jerome.

Any signal officer assigned to a division would have more than one enlisted
signalman detailed to accompany him. For example, Lemuel Norton's (Chief
Signal officer, AOP) report states that on June 20, two signal officers were
assigned to each Corps, and mentions the 1st, 11th and 12th Corps thereafter
establishing contact with each other by signal flag. He report also
indicates three signal officers being assigned to Pleasonton's cavalry corps
on June 26. His report also lists casualties (wounded or captured) to
signal officers and signalmen. Even though he speaks in terms of the
officers assigned to the various headquarters, enlisted signalmen would have
been detailed along with them, as a matter of course.
