Eric,
Thank you very much for your reply. Yes, Stone was a Private, on detached
duty from the 5th Connecticut Infantry. He served under Jerome during the
Battle of Yorktown on the gunboat "Aroostook", and also at Fredericksburg on the
"corn bluff". I do not know, and doubt if anyone knows, who the other
flagmen were that were assigned to Jerome's command that day. Perhaps the
information is in the records of the S.C. in the National Archives. Maybe some day
I'll have to time to go there and research it!
If Jerome was indeed the only Signal Officer assigned to Buford, then Stone
must have been working under him directly, as one of his flagmen/couriers.
Following Gettysburg, I have determined that Stone must have been with Brig.
Gen. Merritt, head of the Reserve Brigade of Cavalry under Buford, because he
was captured on June 21 at Manassas Gap, and from the O.R. it was Merritt's
troops that were engaged there that day. Do you think that I am correct in
this assumption?
Thanks!
Melanie
