Jim,
I couldn't agree more, both about Team of Rivals and about Kate Chase.
I felt that way about Mary Lincoln too. There were times though that I
thought they really were two of a kind; both could be very catty and
actually a bit viscous; both highly intelligent; both caught up in
tragedy. The Seward and Blair women were interesting studies too.
Goodwin give us not only a good grasp of the political situation, but
great insight into all of the key players. Team of Rivals brought home
to me the genius of Lincoln as no other work has done. (Also the genius
of Doris Kearns Goodwin!)
