Wow Phil,
Thanks for that substantive and eloquent reply. I'm looking forward to any opinion you offer, or a work someday? on any topic that comes up in the GDG! Keep up the great review!

Henry,
J.D. addressed the footnote question.
No, I am not a teacher - I consider myself a student of the Gettysburg
campaign. I produce the maps for Gettysburg Magazine, and in that
capacity, I have occasionally emailed Dave Shultz for a clarification
and he has always responded with a wealth of information that is both
generous and helpful to the Gettysburg student.
What I failed to mention previously is that Dave and Dave detail the
critical role Federal Artillery, especially Thomas and Turnbull,
played, along with the 1st Minn, Willard's Brigade, and the 19th Maine
in stopping the Confederate juggernaut as it came close to severing the
Union line on Cemetery Ridge. And above all is Hancock riding from hot
spot to hot spot dousing the flames with decisive actions.
If this book is any indication, their next opus on the Federal
Artillery at Gettysburg, will be ground-breaking and will fill in
details that have gone missing for too long.
