Having read some five dozen histories that describe the action of Wright's
Brigade on July 2, I can say frankly that their depictions are all over the
map.
Coddington and George Stewart are two who dismiss outright the claims of
Rans Wright. Other historians just as notable essentially take him at his
word. Curiously, most recent histories acknowledge a breach of the Federal
line by these Georgians, but blur where it actually may have occurred. If
they actually gained the crest of the ridge, however briefly, explanations
have to be offered to deal with seemingly contradictory Yankee accounts. If
they fell short, explanations have to be offered to deal with the virtually
unanimous Rebel accounts that they really did.
There are a lot more pieces to this puzzle than most have acknowledged. It
is to my mind, frankly, one of the most intriguing mysteries of the
battle. I'll address a number of the pieces at our Winter Stomp on December
28 and look forward to any and all who may be able to walk the ground.
Skeptics are welcome.
