I have read that Central and Southern Pa. was a hotbed for Copperheads and
those disloyal to the North. When I read this I was embarrassed because I
come from this area.

Ginny,
According to "Firestorm at Gettysburg" by Slade and Alexander, there
were
two newspapers in Gettysburg. The Adams Sentinel was Republican and the
Gettysburg Compiler was Democrat (page 17). According to an article called
"The Press Reports the Battle of Gettysburg" by J. Cutler Andrews, Robert
Goodloe Harper was editor of the weekly Adams Sentinel, and was on the scene
reporting the battle.
Henry J. Stahle was editor of the Compilor. Stahle was arrested
during the
first day's battle for "consorting with the enemy." He claimed his actions
has been "misconstrued." See page 164 in "Firestorm." There also is some
information about the political divide among the citizens in town. Some
Democrats hled pro-South sentiments. According to Provost Marshal General
Marsena Patrick's diary, following the battle he had trouble getting
cooperation from the people in town. His impression was that many of them
were "Copperheads."

Lew and I will be giving a presentation to the SUV tomorrow, and in part of
the program I discuss the demographics of the town of Gettysburg, mentioning
the three newspapers at the time. For the life of me, I cannot remember
where I have read information on them. I ASSUME that one was a Republican,
one a Democrat, and one an Independent, as far as politics were concerned.
Is that correct? Can someone steer me to the right book on this?
Thanks for your help.
