Lee's position at Williamsport was very similar to his position at Antietam, with the size of the two forces also being similar (40,000 for Lee, 80,000 for Meade). In addition, Lee had evidently learned the lesson of Culp's Hill, and was heavily entrenched. Lee thought Antietam was his most masterful battle, and I think he was right. Meade had seen with his own eyes the battle of Antietam, and witnessed the results of Lee's skill. Also, Lee's masterful battle battle at Antietam was fought without the use of breastworks (unless you want to count the sunken road).

Based on Lee's track record of success in defensive battles, and the demonstrated strength of breastworks in strengthening defense, I agree with one of the generals who was there who said "I think the General acted wisely".
