Hello,

   I think the question is more complex than an either or solution.  There 
are those who say events dictated actions in either direction.  I believe 
in Lincoln's subsequent letters, he has realized this and is not being 
facile in his comments about that realization that perhaps the army could 
not have been destroyed.
