service willingly; that both his parents were Union people.

	An aside to this story is that soldiers like this, who were drafted or
coerced into the army against their will, were the best sources of military
information when they were captured or deserted.  They were either willing
to tell all, or were easily enticed to reveal useful information with
incentives.
