<< I once passed along the thought in this space that the best thing for the
Confederacy following Hooker's defeat at Chancellorsville would have been
for Lee to be sent to Mississippi to reorganize and rally the troops in
their confrontation with Grant -- leaving Longstreet behind to command the
ANV and keep an eye on the much deflated Union army. I got roundly taken to
task on that point by just about everyone who responded, so once burned I
will not return there. >>
Hmmm,....not by me, I hope. Although I can't say I recall that discussion. It's actually an interesting line of discussion.
Haven't really thought it through, but could see both pros and cons to doing so. Lee is perhaps a surer hand in the west, in dealing with Grant. But does he have enough to work with out there to confront Grant effectively?
Back east, does this course of action leave the ANV overly passive, and not adequately take advantage of the summer campaign season to try to take advantage of the AOP's defeat. Would Richmond demand a more active and agressive ANV. And is the AOP is able to recoup, and uses the lack of agressive action by the ANV as a chance to resume the offensive, would Richmond be comfortable not having Lee on hand and in command of the ANV?
