Glory is the only movie out there right now that shows the horror of civil
war combat as it should be depicted in a movie. The opening sequence on the
Battle of Antietam in my view is the best and most accurate depiction of a
battle committed to film. The James Island battles also depicted in the
movie are top notch also.
Gettysburg was ok but as a whole the movie was cheese-ball and way too
sentimental in its depiction of the battles.
God's and Generals was just super cheese-ball with everything. The battle of
Fredericksburg sequence is the only part of that movie I can stomach.
I have to say that Cold Mountain was very good in its depiction of civil war
battles, brief though they were. I thought their depiction of Petersburg was
excellent. Also the depiction of the band leading the new recruits out of
town was really well done. Thank Goodness they Got Don Troian, Brain
Pohanka and Brian Kraus to consult on that movie or it would have also been
a disaster.

I wish they would make a "Saving Private Ryan" style
Civil War movie. All the ones I've seen, gloss over
the pure brutality of battle and there is very little
bloodshed. Not that I'm a blood and guts fanatic, but
my respect for World War 2 veterans skyrocketed after
seeing Spielberg's movie and I think the Civil War
would be made more pertinent to future generations
with a more realistic depiction. Put it this way,
what you read in books, is nowhere near what I've seen
on the silver screen.
