I have really enjoyed the discussion about G'burg and GAG.
In my humble opinion, G'burg (the movie) was a very good film based on
an excellent book (Killer Angels). GAG (the movie) was a bad film based
on an even worse book. I still don't know what Jeff Shaara's
qualifications were to write GAG, with more books to follow.
I especially appreciated the other recent comment that we are still
waiting for a Civil War film in the style of Saving Private Ryan, as far
as realism of battle, etc. go.
One thing that impressed me very much about SPR was the volume of NOISE
and confusion. It was the **constant** "whizzing" of bullets in SPR
that made you want to put your own head down. Same goes for "Band of
Brothers."
I think most Civil War filmamkers have gotten the *sights* down
pat...it's the **sound** and confusion that's missing. The volume of
fire should have our ears ringing.
The one Civil War film I remember that did have the "whizzing" was
"Wicked Spring."
Just my two cents.
Best Regards,
Jim Schmidt
